Over 8% of Washington adults are veterans. In August 2022, the passage of the Sergeant First Class Heath Robinson Honoring Our PACT Act expanded VA benefits eligibility for more than 354,000 veterans in Washington state. There is a serious need for additional attorneys to assist veterans and their families in obtaining VA benefits, especially pro bono attorneys. Attorneys who represent veterans must be accredited through the Department of Veterans Affairs; within 12 months obtaining accreditation (and every two years thereafter), accredited attorneys must attend three hours of training about VA benefits issues. This encore presentation * of the three-hour training will cover the basics about VA benefits: an overview of the accreditation process, eligibility for VA benefits, the most common VA benefits types (disability compensation, non-service connected pension, and dependency and indemnity compensation), and the claims and appeals process.
