The Law of Disability and Ableism: Then, Now, and Tomorrow
Date:
April 1, 2021
Time:
This half-day CLE will address the concepts of Disability and Ableism. We will look at and support the role of lawyers as change agents to fight ableist systems and build more inclusive communities for individual, community, or organizational clients with experiences that fall under the vast and diverse tent of disability. During our time together we will examine the historic underpinnings of current ableist structures in our society at large and as represented in case law and legislative actions. We will also look at existing legal mechanisms that have been devised to address ableism and how to use them in light of both the passive appeal of the status quo and the active resistance from ableist beliefs and structures in the real world in which we lawyers do our advocacy.
