There are three types of status certificates. Two are provided by the Washington State Bar Association and the other by the Washington State Supreme Court.
The Certification of Current Status certificate, provided by the WSBA, reflects the member's status as of the date stated. Historical information about status, including periods on inactive status, administrative and disciplinary suspensions, disbarments, resignation, etc., are not reflected in this information, but are available through a Certification of Status History. Complete discipline information, including confidential and public information about grievances and disciplinary proceedings, is available, with written authorization signed by the member, through a Discipline History Certificate.
The Certification of Status History certificate, provided by the WSBA, reflects only public information that affected the member's status with the WSBA. Confidential disciplinary information about grievances and information about currently pending disciplinary proceedings is available, with written authorization signed by the member, through a Discipline History Certificate.
The standard charge for both of the WSBA certificates is $25 each. Extra copies requested at the same time are $1 each. If certificates are requested for several lawyers from a firm, the charge is $25 for each lawyer (and $1 for each extra copy per lawyer requested at the same time).
For expedited service, there is an additional fee of $7.50 per attorney, per certificate.
To order a Certification of Current Status and/or Certification of Status History certificate, send a written request and payment to the WSBA Service Center at 1325 Fourth Ave., Ste. 600, Seattle, WA 98101-2539; fax 206-727-8316. Please include the following:
Payment may be made by check (payable to WSBA), MasterCard or Visa. If paying by credit card, please provide card number, expiration date, and the name as it appears on the card. The process takes one to two weeks.
Another type of certificate is available from the Washington State Supreme Court. If you need a certificate from the highest court or an officer of the court, please call the Clerk's Office at 360-357-2077 or visit the Washington Courts website for more information.
Members, or others, can request a Discipline History Certificate, which has confidential disciplinary information, directly from the Office of Disciplinary Counsel. For a Discipline History Certificate (which certifies a lawyer’s status, the date of admission, and summarizes grievances and/or discipline imposed), a request must be in writing and signed by the lawyer.
