Washington offers three types of member status certificates. Two are provided by the Washington State Bar Association and the other by the Washington Supreme Court.
The Certification of Current Status certificate, provided by the WSBA, reflects the member's status as of the date stated. Historical information about status, including periods on inactive status, administrative and disciplinary suspension, disbarment, resignation, etc., are not reflected in this information but are available through a Certification of Status History.
The Certification of Status History provided by the WSBA reflects only public information that affected the member's status with the WSBA. Confidential disciplinary information about grievances and information about currently pending disciplinary proceedings is available, with written authorization signed by the member, through a Discipline History Certificate. (Note: The Certification of Status History is not a Discipline History Certificate.)
The standard charge for both of the WSBA certificates is $25 each. Extra copies requested at the same time are $1 each. If certificates are requested for several lawyers from a firm, the charge is $25 for each lawyer (and $1 for each extra copy per lawyer requested at the same time).
Expedited service requires an additional fee of $7.50 per attorney, per certificate.
To order a Certification of Current Status or Certification of Status History, send a written request and payment to:
WSBA Service Center
1325 Fourth Ave., Suite 600
Seattle, WA 98101-2539
Payment may be made by check (payable to WSBA), MasterCard or Visa. If paying by credit card, please provide card number, expiration date, and the name as it appears on the card. The process takes one to two weeks.
Please Note: Our service provider will charge you a separate, non-refundable transaction fee of 2.5% on all bank card transactions. There is no transaction fee if you mail in a check.
Another type of certificate is available from the Washington State Supreme Court. If you need a certificate from the state's highest court or an officer of the court, please call the clerk's Office at 360-357-2077 or visit the Washington Courts website for more information.
For a Discipline History Certificate, which certifies a lawyer’s status, date of admission, and grievance and discipline summaries, requests must be in writing and signed by the lawyer. The charge is $30, and additional originals are $1 each. For expedited service, there is an additional charge of $7.50 per lawyer.
To order a Discipline History Certificate, which has confidential disciplinary information, contact the Office of Disciplinary Counsel.
