Lawyer-to-Lawyer Program

We encourage all WSBA members to consider this program!

The Lawyer-to-Lawyer Program fosters professionalism among members of the WSBA by:

  • Helping newer lawyers learn the basics of "lawyering" from more experienced legal practitioners and bridging the gap between law school and law practice;
  • Carefully bringing together lawyers with differing levels of experience for the mutual exchange of information to benefit the participants, the profession and the public;
  • Promoting the awareness, understanding, appreciation and application of the principles of professionalism.

The WSBA Lawyer-to-Lawyer Program has a critical need for mentors! We currently need mentors in the Seattle/King County area in several practice areas. How Much Time is Involved?

As of February 2003, protégé applications to the Program are put on a waiting list. We anticipate the wait time to be 9 - 12 months. We will accept the application and work on your match in the order we received your application.

Please consider joining a WSBA Section or Committee of interest to you and/or contacting your local bar associations to learn of ways to become more involved with other attorneys, again through the sections or committee work or through volunteer opportunities.

This relationship offers new lawyers an opportunity to heighten the degree of civility, professionalism and competence with which they represent their clients by creating an avenue for newly admitted attorneys to learn from more experienced members of the Washington State Bar. Specific activities of the Lawyer-to-Lawyer match will vary with the needs and interests of the lawyers participating in the program. The program is not designed to foster legal advice between the parties.

For more insight into how you can work with a mentor, please read "How Mentors Can Help You," by Terese Droste and "Ten Rules for Mentoring Relationships" by Jan Hyun.

If you wish to participate in this program, please complete the Lawyer to Lawyer Participant Information Form and for additional information, please contact Julie Salmon at juliesa@wsba.org or 206-733-5914 or Peter Roberts at peter@wsba.org or 206-727-8237.

Lawyer-to-Lawyer Program Event

The Law Office Management Assistance Program Committee is pleased to offer a round table discussion for the Lawyer to Lawyer Program. This session is open to all Lawyer to Lawyer Program participants currently on the waiting list for one-to-one matches. In addition to our discussion, this session is a wonderful opportunity to network with other newer attorneys in similar stages in their careers.  Bring your questions and your cards! We try to schedule these round table discussions quarterly and our next discussion is set for early March. Please check back for the date and time.
