The purpose of the Washington Young Lawyers Division (WYLD) shall be to encourage the interest and participation of young lawyers in WSBA activities, to develop and conduct programs of value to young lawyers and the public, to improve the legal system, and to enhance the quality of the legal profession in our state and our country.

June 17, 2009: The King County Superior Court would like to cordially invite and welcome young lawyers and law clerks to observe the court "in action" at the downtown Seattle King County Courthouse and the Regional Justice Center in Kent on Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the jury room and hear juror orientation at each courthouse and to observe actual civil and criminal jury trials.
There will also be an opportunity to meet the Presiding Judge, the Hon. Bruce W. Hilyer (downtown courthouse), and the Chief Judge at the Regional Justice Center in Kent, the Hon. Brian Gain. The Judges' will conduct a question and answer period after the courtroom observations. The event will begin at 8:15 a.m. and end at noon (for pre-registered guests only).

August 6, 2009: Free CLE! The Snohomish County Greater Access and Assistance Project (GAAP) will offer a free family law CLE (3.5 credits pending) to any attorney agreeing to take on a GAAP case. The cost of the CLE is $100 for those not agreeing to take on a GAAP case. Full details and a registration form are available

October 17-18, 2009: Oregon Reciprocity CLE for Washington Attorneys in Tigard, OR. The two-day CLE offers the 15 required CLE credits (pending) for reciprocity in Oregon. The WYLD has secured a special price on this program: $250. Click

WYLD Trustee-Elects Announced
Megan Vogel was elected to the King County District position on June 26, 2009. Her term begins on October 1, 2009. King County is represented by three trustees; Ms. Vogel will join continuing Trustees Michael Pellicciotti and Manish Borde.
Dionne Padilla-Huddleston ran unopposed for the Peninsula District Trustee position and has been deemed elected to that position pursuant to the WYLD Bylaws, Section 3.10. Her election was confirmed at the May 29, 2009 BOT meeting in Yakima, WA. Her term begins on October 1, 2009.
Chris Maharry ran unopposed for the Pierce County District Trustee position and has been deemed elected to that position pursuant to the WYLD Bylaws, Section 3.10. His election was confirmed at the May 29, 2009 BOT meeting in Yakima, WA. His term begins on October 1, 2009.
The Washington Young Lawyers Division (WYLD) Editorial Advisory Committee (EAC) is seeking an active member of the WYLD* to serve as DeNovo Associate Editor.
Responsibilities include assisting the editor with procuring and editing feature articles, working with authors, and managing DeNovo correspondence. The associate editor will work closely with the editor, the EAC, and the WYLD liaison in the areas of organizing content, proofreading and editing, and coordinating articles and schedules to meet deadlines. The associate editor will ultimately assume the position of DeNovo editor. Applicants with previous journalism or publication experience are preferred.

Applications must be received by 5:00 p.m. on July 15, 2009. The associate editor will begin his or her duties in September 2009. The position term is 12 months as associate editor, followed by 12 months as editor.
*Any active member of the WSBA is also a member of the WYLD until December 31 of the year in which he or she turns 36, or until December 31 of the fifth year in which he or she has been admitted to practice, whichever is later.
The WYLD is accepting nominations for the Thomas Neville Pro Bono Award, Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year, and the Professionalism Award. All three awards recognize lawyers who epitomize the best in the legal profession. Nominations are also being accepted for Outstanding YLD Affiliate or Organization for recognition of public service and/or member service programs.
To nominate someone, please complete this form. Please note that a completed nomination form must accompany each nomination to be considered. Self-nominations will not be accepted.
Nominations must be received by 5:00 p.m. on August 1, 2009.
Network with the future leaders of the legal profession, strategize to improve opportunities and programming for new lawyers, participate in an aspect of the bar that matches your interests- Young and new lawyers are encouraged to apply for one of the following:
- Committee Chair/Co-Chair for WYLD standing committees
(Membership, Committee for Diversity, CLE, Pro Bono/Public Service)
- Program Chair/Co-Chair for WYLD annual events and programs
(Bridging the Gap, Trial Advocacy Program, Pre-Law Leadership Conference, YMCA Mock Trial Program, Youth and Law Forum, GAAP)
- WYLD Section Liaison to a WSBA Practice Section
WYLD Chair/Co-Chair and Section Liaison terms begin October 1, 2009, and end on September 30, 2010. Chairs/Co-Chairs are required to conduct monthly committee meetings; meet with the WYLD President-Elect prior to their term to discuss long-range planning and committee budgets; and attend a WYLD Committee Chair orientation in the fall. Section liaisons will submit biannual reports to the WYLD about Section activities and opportunities for collaboration.

The Trial Advocacy Program (TAP) offers members of the WYLD an opportunity to improve their litigation skills, in both the civil and criminal justice fields, and acquire trial experience. The TAP provides a unique opportunity to interact with and learn from more experienced practitioners, and to network with other young lawyers. The TAP is an intensive two-weekend program emphasizing jury trials, and includes lectures, discussion groups, mock trials, exercises, and general education and instruction in courtroom trial practice.

Create a three-minute-or-less video that captures your vision of "justice for all" and win one of two $1,000 prizes! Washington residents of all ages and filmmaking abilities are encouraged to enter.
Two winners will be chosen - one by a panel of judges, and one ("People's Choice") by YouTube users. Winners in each category will receive a $1,000 cash prize. One video may win both awards.
Members of the panel of judges are:

- Krist Novoselic – Musician and media columnist
- Barbara Serrano – Managing Editor, Yakima Herald-Republic
- Elizabeth Shepherd – Director of Children's Programming, Northwest Film Forum
The People's Choice winner will be the video that receives the largest number of views on the contest's YouTube page (http://www.YouTube.com/group/WashingtonStateBar) between April 15 and July 1, 2009.
Both winners will receive an expenses-paid trip to the Washington State Bar Association Annual Meeting and Awards dinner in September 2009, where winning videos will be shown and the winners recognized.
This contest is open to all residents of Washington state. Individuals, groups or classrooms may enter, and are eligible for either award. Persons under 18 years of age at the time of entry must receive their parents' permission and provide written parental consent before their entries are considered. WSBA employees, governors and officers and family members of employees, governors, and officers of the Washington State Bar Association are not eligible.
To enter the "Justice For All: A Northwest Perspective" contest:

2. Make a video. Be creative!
De Novo has moved to an online-only format. By switching to online distribution, the WYLD will be able to more effectively focus your membership dues, reduce paper use, lessen fuel consumption, and conserve trees.

The Latina/o Bar Association of Washington, in partnership with the Law Offices of Schroeter Goldmark & Bender, invite you to be a volunteer at an upcoming Free Legal Clinic for the Latina/o Community at El Centro de la Raza on the above-listed date. This clinic occurs every second Wednesday of the month unless there is a holiday.

Initiated by the Washington Young Lawyers Division in 2002-2003 in response to the WSBA's long-range goal to support the professional development of new lawyers, WSBA new admittees are offered one free year of membership to one section based on the date admitted to the Bar and in relationship to the current section membership year.
Individuals admitted to the Bar between September 2007 and September 2008 may take advantage of free membership in one section for the current section membership year of October 1, 2008, through September 30, 2009.
The Washington Young Lawyers Division values the support and interest of the WSBA's 27 sections to provide this mutually beneficial opportunity for new lawyers.

The WYLD provides programs and services of special interest to young lawyers, to the public and to those denied access to the justice system. In particular, the WYLD:
- Publishes De Novo, a bi-monthly publication serving young lawyers.
- Sponsors programs that benefit high school students, including the Pre-Law Student Leadership Conference and the YMCA Mock Trial Competition.
- Sponsors seminars that address the questions facing young lawyers as we balance our professional and personal lives.
Membership. Any active member of the Association shall be a member of the Division until the 31st day of December of the year in which such member attains the age of thirty-six (36) years or until the 31st day of December of the fifth (5th) year in which any such member has been admitted to practice in any state, whichever is later.
