The Board of Governors will hold its next meeting on Friday, April 27, and Saturday, April 28, at the Tulalip Resort, in Tulalip. Chairman Sheldon, of the Tulalip Tribe, and Second District Governor Phillip Buri, of Bellingham, will welcome the Board to Tulalip. The public meeting will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with lunch from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, April 27, and 9:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 28.

Meeting Highlights

  • The Board will welcome members of the local bench and bar at lunch. A highlight of the luncheon will be the presentation of a Local Hero Award by WSBA President Stephen Crossland. Former police chief John Turner, nominated by the Snohomish County Bar Association, will be presented with the award. As the Board of Governors travels around the state, these awards are presented to local lawyers and non-lawyers who have made noteworthy contributions to their communities.
  • The Membership Study Team will present the results of the WSBA Membership Study. Chair of the Board of Governors Diversity Committee, Governor Roger Leishman, of Seattle, will update the Board on diversity matters.
  • The Budget and Audit Committee will submit a series of budget reduction measures recommended by senior leadership that can be decided, and acted upon swiftly to begin reducing the Bar’s footprint – and impact. These recommendations will be discussed on Saturday, and include: spending down $1 million in unrestricted reserves in each of 2013 and 2014; cutting approximately $1.3 million in annual, non-mission-critical expenses; and evaluating new revenue streams.
