About the WYLC

The Washington Young Lawyers Committee (WYLC) is the vehicle for new attorneys and law students to get involved with the Washington State Bar Association. By learning about resources or events, or assisting to develop programs, participants build the skills and networks to transition into the practice of law, serve the public, and enhance leadership skills.

Who is involved?

The Washington State Bar Association considers an active member a young or new lawyer if he or she meets at least one of two criteria:

  1. The member has been admitted to practice for less than five years (in any state), or
  2. The member is under 36 years of age

There are no fees for participation with the WYLC.
Current law students are welcome to participate in committee activities.

Committee Leadership

Leadership within the WYLC affords new and young lawyers the opportunity to build connections across the state and throughout the legal community. Young lawyers partner with the WSBA staff and programs to plan initiatives to support others new to the profession. As a result, the Bar is enhanced by the perspective and energy of its new members.

Committee Structure

The Washington Young Lawyers Committee reports to the Board of Governors. Each of eighteen committee members represents a constituent district and supports local and specialty bar associations. Committee members:

  1. work to connect young lawyers to available resources and opportunities.
  2. provide feedback and ideas as liaisons to WSBA programs or entities.
  3. work on projects to support new alwyers.

WYLC liaisons to WSBA Sections

The WYLC partners with the WSBA Sections to appoint a new lawyer liaison to each practice area section each year. The liaison serves to connect other new lawyers to section activities and to provide perspective to the WYLC and to the section executive committees about possible collaboration. Liaisons serve a one year term and are appointed by the WYLC Chair.
