The Jewish Federation's Cardozo Society of Washington State is pleased to co-sponsor the following CLE, hosted by StandWithUs Northwest:
Law Pertaining to the Status of Lands and Communities in the West Bank and Gaza
Presented by Professor of Law Avi Bell, this CLE will examine legal issues concerning claims in property law and the law of sovereignty in the West Bank and Gaza strip, including the contentious issue of "settlements."
Among the issues the CLE will address are:
Law of territorial sovereignty in international law
Time and location of the application of the laws of belligerent occupation and their relationship to the laws of territorial sovereignty and international human rights law
Territorial scope of international human rights law related to population transfer and property
Impact of the law of territorial sovereignty and belligerent occupation on issues of property ownership and development
Scope of the law of belligerent occupation concerning population transfer and property
National and international bodies empowered to interpret and apply these norms
Relevant part of local property laws
For the above mentioned legal issues and others, the CLE will review central parts of legal doctrine in the abstract and apply them to the particular factual setting presented by the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Professor Avi Bell
Professor Bell clerked for Justice Mishael Cheshin of the Supreme Court of Israel and for the High Court of Justice Department within the Israeli State Attorney's office. He was a visiting professor at the University of Connecticut Law School and Fordham University Law School. He is a member of the faculty of law at Bar Ilan University. Professor Bell joined the University of San Diego School of Law faculty in 2009.
